TEXACO TESTS OIL STRIKE OFF ANGOLA

A combine led by a unit of Texaco Inc. has found more oil off the northwest coast of Angola. Drilled to 11,160 ft measured depth, Texaco's 1 Calafate flowed at a combined rate of more than 4,750 b/d of 35-37 gravity oil from four zones at 10,005-410 ft in a Lower Cretaceous dolomitic sandstone. Site is in 135 ft of water, 21 miles offshore on Block 2, a 1 million acre tract that has yielded several other oil discoveries (see map, OGJ, Apr. 9, 1990, p. 40).

The 1 Calafate also is 3.2 miles southwest of East Lombo field, placed on production in late 1987, and about 150 miles north of the capital city of Luanda.

Operations in Block 2 are conducted under a production sharing agreement signed with state owned Sonangol in 1980.

Since that time, the Texaco combine has been producing Essungo and Cuntala fields in the northern part of the block. In the far southern part of the block, production began in late 1987 from East Lombo, Tubarao, West Sulele, and South Sulele fields.

Texaco holds a 20% interest in Block 2. Sonangol holds a 25% interest, while Total Angola and Petrobras Internacional SA each hold 27.5%.
