BIG INTRASTATE GAS PIPELINE SLATED FOR FLORIDA
United Gas Pipe Line Co. and Coastal Corp. unit ANR Pipeline Co. have agreed to form a joint venture to build an $800 million, 560 mile intrastate natural gas pipeline in Florida.
The line, with initial capacity of 400 MMcfd expandable to 1 bcfd, would extend service from United's system terminus near Pensacola in the Florida Panhandle to northern and Central Florida.
A service date of November 1994 is expected, pending prompt regulatory approvals.
Florida Power Corp., St. Petersburg, Fla., has signed a letter of intent to purchase 300 MMcfd of firm transportation capacity on SunCoast and has retained an option to become an equity owner in the venture.
Other Florida utilities and gas customers also have expressed interest in the project.
United and ANR officials say SunCoast will give Florida customers access to gas from all major supply basins in the U.S. and Canada.
The new pipeline will use existing rights-of-way along about 65% of its planned route.
