Nelson-Farrar indexes for finished steels changed randomly during the period 1991-1994. Generally speaking, the alloy steels changed less than carbon steel products.

Alloy bars started the period with an index valve of 796.5 and finished at 857.6. Alloy sheets stood at index value of 501.1 in early 1991, and at 528.2 in late 1994. Stainless strip varied from 517.3 to 508.3 over the same period.

Index for cold-rolled sheets was 1,087.5 during the first quarter of 1991, and stood at 1,141.4 during the last quarter of 1994. During the same period, structural plates started the 4-year period at an index of 1,072.3, and ended at 1,135.5.

Composite index for steel products varied from 958.0 in the third quarter of 1991 to 1,023.5 during the last quarter of 1994. The composite category includes all steel-mill products. This analysis shows relative stability in the cost of finished steels over the 1991-1994 period.
