British Gas plc has signed a contract to supply 700 bcf of gas produced in the U.K. to Germany's Wingas GmbH, Kassel, with delivery through the planned Interconnector pipeline from U.K. to Belgium.

Deliveries are slated to begin in October 1998, when the Interconnector link becomes operational. British Gas is the largest shareholder in Interconnector with a 40% interest.

Gas will be supplied from a number of U.K. fields and transported via the Interconnector through Belgium's gas grid to Aachen on the German border.

From there Wingas will transport the gas through its Wedal gas trunkline, currently under construction, which joins the existing Midal pipeline system.

This marks the second gas supply contract involving the Interconnector. Conoco (U.K.) Ltd. earlier agreed to provide Wingas with 35 bcf/year of gas for 10 years (OGJ, Feb. 26, p. 33).

A British Gas official said that while Belgium's Distrigaz SA has not specified how it will transfer gas cross-country, as a partner in Interconnector it has undertaken to handle transport of supplies from U.K.

The official said construction of new pipeline link between the Interconnector's Zeebrugge terminal and the Aachen border terminal is likely.
