Exploration Amoco scores off Trinidad-Tobago

Amoco Trinidad Oil Co. has strung together four offshore discoveries in four attempts in an exploration program east of Trinidad and Tobago. Amoco said combined reserves of the strikes could furnish more than half the feed needed to supply an additional train for a proposed gas liquefaction project in Trinidad and Tobago, as well as provide a secure gas supply for other domestic uses.

Amoco, which holds 100% interests in all the discoveries, disclosed the two latest finds in late February:

  • 5 East Mayaro, a delineation well in 290 ft of water about 45 miles east of Trinidad's Galeota Point. It cut 565 ft of hydrocarbon pay in five sands in an untested fault block above 13,315 ft TD, including two zones previously unproductive in East Mayaro field.

  • 1 Corallita, a wildcat in 357 ft of water about 8 miles southeast of 5 East Mayaro. The well cut 1,200 of gas pay in five sands above 15,124 ft TD, less than 7 months after Amoco began a 3D seismic survey of the area.

Amoco's 5 East Mayaro flowed 3,400 b/d of oil through a 1/2 in. choke from 35 ft of perforations in a 90 ft interval. It was the deeper of the two new pays encountered in the field.

A test of the other new productive zone yielded 34.9 MMcfd of gas through a 1/2 in. choke. The remaining three pays penetrated by 5 East Mayaro contained gas-bearing sands.

The 1 Corallita flowed 27.4 MMcfd of gas through a 34/64 in. choke on a test of the lowest pay encountered and 33 MMcfd of gas through a 44/64 in. choke from a sand at about 11,900 ft.

Amoco at last report was drilling two wildcats off eastern Trinidad. The two rig drilling program is to continue for several months.

Amoco also continues to acquire 3D seismic data in the area.
