Formosa Plastics Group is considering building its own tanker fleet to supply the huge petrochemical complex the group is building at Mailiao in northern Taiwan.
FPG has tentatively decided to order six to eight 200,000 dwt crude oil tankers at a total cost of about $436 million.
While it would be more expensive to set up its own fleet than to commission shipping companies to transport the crude oil required by the new complex, FPG officials apparently feel the company would be better able to handle risks involved in the transportation of large volumes of crude oil if it had its own fleet.
FPG currently owns and operates a fleet of 11 petrochemical vessels, each with a loading capacity of 30,000 metric tons.
