A joint venture of state firm Public Petroleum Corp. of Greece (DEP SA) and Greek private firm Thraki SA let contract to Brown & Root, Leatherhead, U.K., to conduct a detailed study of an oil pipeline from Bulgaria to Greece.

The DEP/Thraki venture plans to offer an alternative route for the import of Russian and Caspian Sea oil via the Black Sea to international markets, following an agreement between Bulgarian, Greek, and Russian governments.

The planned pipeline would extend 290 km from the Black Sea port of Burgas in Bulgaria, where oil would arrive from Novorossiisk and other Black Sea ports, to Alexandropoulis, Greece. The design capacity of the pipeline would be 35 million metric tons/year.

Brown & Root said a preliminary feasibility study is already under way by another company, and that its own project will include the technical design, detailed economic and financial study, and safety and environmental impact studies.
