SHELL PURSUING THAI LNG IMPORTS
Royal Dutch/Shell Group is pursuing a liquefied natural gas import project in Thailand.
Thailand's potential demand for LNG is estimated at 4 million metric tons/year in 2000.
Shell officials involved in Brunei and Oman LNG projects recently have discussed with Thai officials the possibility of Thailand importing LNG from the two countries. Shell said Brunei could supply Thailand as much as 2 million tons/year as early as 1997. It is developing capacity of 5 million tons/year in Oman.
State owned Petroleum Authority of Thailand also is talking to Qatar and other LNG producers.
Thai energy planners are casting about for other options to fuel the nation's growth in electrical power demand. Domestic natural gas production can't keep up with demand. Proposals to build power plants fueled by nuclear energy or a mix of imported coal and indigenous lignite face strong environmental opposition. Hydropower options are limited.
