Kuwait is making progress in recovery from the effects of the Persian Gulf war.

Kuwait Oil Co. has mobilized 17 drilling rigs to drill new wells and work over damaged wells since liberation of the country early in 1991, a KOC official told Oil & Gas Journal.

A total 111 oil wells have been drilled and more than 650 wells have been worked over, while 110 wells were found to have escaped sabotage by Iraqi invaders. Of 26 damaged oil gathering centers, 18 have been repaired and returned to operation.

KOC's 1993-98 exploration strategy involves 2D seismic surveys of most of the land and transition zones of Kuwait, 3D seismic surveys to provide more precise subsurface information in some oil fields, and drilling a number of deep wildcats throughout Kuwait, targeting oil reservoirs in Jurassic and pre-Jurassic formations.

Restoration of Kuwait's refineries is expected to be complete in first half 1994. Kuwait National Petroleum Co. operated three refineries with total capacity of 830,000 b/d before the war.

About 25% of storage capacity at the refineries was destroyed, either through direct damage to tanks or toss of connected pipelines.

Temporary repairs of damaged oil piers at Mina Al-Ahmadi terminal and control systems at Mina Abdullah sea island were completed early to allow exports.

Repairs of marine export facilities, including the oil export pier at Shuaiba terminal, are expected to be complete in first half 1994.
