TransCanada PipeLines Ltd. has filed an application with Canada's National Energy Board for a $500 million expansion of its natural gas pipeline system. (OGJ, Apr. 13, p. 36). The company, currently in the process of a $2.4 billion expansion, said the additional growth is needed to serve markets in the U.S. and Central Canada. The planned project, to cover work planned in 1993 and 1994, would add 227 miles of loops in Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Ontario and 227 MMcfd of capacity.

The company said customers have asked for the additional capacity it is seeking. Cogeneration projects are a major factor in increasing demand.

About 100 MMcfd of the proposed new capacity would serve Canadian markets, mainly in Ontario, and 125 MMcfd for U.S. markets.

TranCanada said the new expansion proposal will have no effect on pipeline shipping tolls.

TransCanada is awaiting NEB approval for $390 million in construction planned for 1992 and 1993 to add 150 MMcfd of capacity.

TransCanada's most recent completed expansion is feeding gas to the U.S. Northeast via a tie in with the Iroquois pipeline system in the U.S.
