The International Association of Geophysical Contractors, Houston, has published a comprehensive set of geophysical operating procedures it believes will assure environmental compatibility.

The guidelines contain a major section discussing the environmental considerations for all types of field activities. That is followed by individual sections containing recommended procedures and practices when working in desert and semi-arid climates, arctic and subarctic areas, rain forests, wetlands, mountainous terrain, and in marine areas.

The organization is distributing "Environmental Guidelines for Worldwide Geophysical Operations" free to members and for $5 to nonmembers.

The publication is being issued as interim guidelines from August 1992 to August 1993 to give contractors a year's practical use in the field before final printing.

Member companies and others are being asked for feedback as the document is used in the field and in the planning stages of geophysical projects.

The association cautioned that the guidelines are not intended to fully cover all circumstances geophysical crews encounter nor to replace the environmental operating policies and practices of individual companies.
