Halliburton Geophysical Services has begun collecting 2-D seismic data in the Black Sea off Bulgaria in the first speculative survey in eastern Europe.

In conjunction with the Bulgarian Committee of Geology and Mineral Resources, the company is acquiring 2,500 line km of data on blocks that will form part of the government's second licensing round later this year.

The five blocks on offer, designated VII, VIII, IV X and XI, are virtually unexplored. No drilling has been done. Water depths range from 650 to 6,500 ft. The blocks adjoin shallower areas awarded in the first round.

Results of the survey will be available by the end of September, at a cost of $168/km. This will allow time for operators to assess prospects before applications are to be submitted. Also, an interpretation report will be prepared by the end of November.

HGS recently set up a joint venture with Bulgarian state company Geofyzika, known as Bulgarian Geophysical Services. This company intends to conduct onshore surveying.
