Action by Thailand's cabinet this month is expected to lead to start of exploration later this year in the joint development area, a 7,300 sq km area in the southern Gulf of Thailand (see map, OGJ Oct. 22, 1990, p. 23). Most important step was cabinet approval of guidelines for negotiating production sharing contracts with private companies holding concessions in the disputed areas, notably Triton Oil Co. off Thailand and Petronas off Malaysia.
