Russia's state owned oil and gas company Rosneft has agreed to help Kazakhstan boost oil production on its Mangyshlak Peninsula. Rosneft, working with its Kazakh counterpart Munaigaz, will target potential oil reserves of about 5 billion bbl contained in about 30 fields. Uzen oil field, thought to hold about one third of that potential, is on tap first.
Rosneft will help work over 600 of 1,500 idle Uzen wells, implement new well stimulation and extended reach and sidetrack drilling techniques, and help alleviate frequent breakdowns of high pressure pipelines. Plans call for developing another five reservoirs in the Uzen area and using chemical injection to boost recovery of highly viscous Uzen crude. Workovers and equipment replacement are covered under an initial 3 year term. Last month, Russia's Gazprom agreed to participate in developing Kazakhstan's supergiant Karachaganak oil/gas/condensate field in cooperation with British Gas plc and Agip SpA.
