Marathon Petroleum Ireland Ltd. has found gas with the last of three obligation wells drilled this year off Southeast Ireland.

Marathon's Block 48/25-3 well, drilled on the West Kinsale prospect 412 miles southwest of Kinsale Head gas field, flowed at a maximum stabilized rate of 23.3 MMcfd through a 7264 in. choke. The combined flow came from three zones at 3,018-89 ft.

The Kan Tan IV semisubmersible rig drilled the strike in 305 ft of water.

The well is suspended to allow subsea development tied back to an existing platform.

Ireland's authorities welcomed the news of Marathon's strike. The Irish government has relaxed licensing and taxation terms in a bid to revive exploration (OGJ, June 5, p. 17).

Meanwhile, renewed interest in Irish assets came from ARCO Irish Holdings Inc., which made a $248 million bid to take over Aran Energy plc, Dublin (OGJ, Aug. 28, p. 42).
