Brazil's Petrobras has purchased a radar system for 1,000 tanks-believed to be the largest single tank-gauging upgrade project in the world.

The company will install 1,000 Saab TankRadar Rex radar tank gauges with custody-transfer accuracy.

The complete system consists of level and temperature measurements with temperature displays. Also included are full-inventory software packages for net volume and custody-transfer calculations and a complete communication system with control-room inventory management connected to the plants' host computers.

The inventory-management system provides levels, temperatures, density, volume, and weight.

Half of the ordered radar tank gauges, or 500 gauges, will be delivered this year, and the rest within 3 years. Four Petrobras refineries, in Canoas, in Minas Gerais, and two in Sao Paulo, will immediately equip their tanks with the radar transmitters.

Custody-transfer accuracy, reliability, and increased environmental protection offered by the fail-safe TankRadar system were factors in Petrobras' decision for the planned upgrade.

Saab's representative Fluxo Servicos de Petroleo Ltd. will carry out the installation.

The Saab TankRadar Rex system, to be installed by Petrobras, measures levels and temperatures inside tanks via a digital noncontact system.
