NELSON-FARRAR QUARTERLY COSTIMATING HOW INDEXES HAVE CHANGED

July 4, 1994
Gerald L. Farrar Contributing Editor Nelson-Farrar cost indexes for finished steels have changed randomly during the period 1990-193. Generally speaking, the alloy steels changed less than carbon steel products. Alloy bars started the period with an index value of 795.6 and finished at 851.0. Alloy sheets stood at an index value of 491.0 in early 1990, and at 516.4 in late 1993. Stainless strip varied from 543.0 to 498.8 over the same period.

Nelson-Farrar cost indexes for finished steels have changed randomly during the period 1990-193.

Index for cold-rolled sheets was 1092.1 during the first quarter of 1990, and stood at 1090.3 during the last quarter of 1993. During the same period, structural plates started at 1095.1 and ended at 1071.3.

Composite index for steel products varied from 984.3 in the first quarter of 1990 to 979.2 during the last quarter of 1993. The composite category includes all steel-mill products. This analysis shows relative stability in the cost of finished steels during the 1990-1993 period.
