UNOCAL TO STEP UP PRODUCTION OFF EAST KALIMANTAN

A unit of Unocal Corp. will begin production from Indonesia's offshore Santan field after finding gas in the second new fault block encountered in the field this year. Unocal Indonesia Ltd.'s 9 Santan directional well, in 254 ft of water off East Kalimantan, flowed 10.4 MMcfd of gas and 450 b/d of condensate through a 1/64 in. choke with 1,140 psi flowing tubing pressure from 80 ft of net pay in Miocene sand at 11,222-610 ft.

The Galvestan Key jack up rig, drilled the well to 12,020 ft in Indonesia's prolific Mahakam Delta trend.

Unocal Indonesia's 9 Santan announcement follows word last month of discovery by the 8 Santan well of another fault block in the field. The 9 Santan well is 4,900 ft southwest of 8 Santan and 4,300 ft west of the 1 West Santan wildcat, the field's discover well.

Unocal will proceed with plans to install a 20 slot platform in Santan field.

Unocal is reviewing data from 8 and 9 Santan and earlier drilling to determine the exact platform location, number of wells needed to fully develop the field, and design of production facilities.

The company expects to start commercial production from the field soon after installing the Santan platform in mid-1997. Santan production is expected to reach 6,000 b/d of oil and condensate and 50 MMcfd of gas.

Santan gas is to be sold to state owned Pertamina for conversion to liquefied natural gas (LNG) at Pertamina's Bontang LNG complex. Santan oil will be sold on the open market.

Unocal discovered Santan field in 1971, but didn't develop the reserves at the time because delineation drilling didn't adequately define the field. Company officials credited regional 3D seismic data with a key role in current efforts to better delineate Santan.

Unocal Indonesia in 1994 has drilled six exploration-delineation wells in Indonesia, including three apparent commercial successes: 8 Santan, 9 Santan, and 10 Serang. The company plans to spud three or four more wildcats off East Kalimantan by yearend to test other prospects.

In addition to Santan, Unocal Indonesia operates six other offshore fields near East Kalimantan producing more than 95,000 b/d of oil and 240 MMcfd of gas. The company holds 100% interest in Santan, Serang, Sepinggan, Melahin, Kerindingan, and Yakin fields and a 50% interest in Attaka field.
