Two natural gas pipeline companies have implemented huge pipe orders for gas pipeline megaprojects in the U.S. and Canada.

Mojave Pipeline Co., anticipating U.S. Government approval of its application to build a $464 million, 600 mile expansion of its interstate pipeline from Topock, Ariz., to Bakersfield, Calif., issued requests for proposals (RFPs) to pipe manufacturers.

Nova Gas Transmission Ltd. issued the biggest order for pipe in its history, part of a 1994-95 expansion program in Canada and worth about $121 million (Canadian).

MOJAVE

Mojave's most recent RFPs were sent to 19 pipe manufacturers with a May 31 deadline. Its goal is to order all necessary pipe later this year.

The company expects the U.S. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission decision on its expansion project could come as early as July. Subject to that approval, Mojave expects construction to begin in spring 1995 and service to start in early 1996.

Mojave's system currently has a capacity of 400 MMcfd and mainly serves the thermal enhanced oil recovery market in Kern County.

Its proposed northern expansion would add 475 MMcfd of capacity and serve municipalities, cogeneration projects, and industrial and manufacturing companies in Central and northern California.

NOVA

Nova's pipe order totals 640 km in length and encompasses pipe diameters of 20-42 in.

Its system expansion will begin this fall and continue into spring 1995.

After bidding was complete, the order was placed with three Canadian steel mills:

  • Ipsco Pipe, Regina, Sask., will provide 55,000 tons of 20, 24, and 36 in. pipe.

  • Stelpipe, Welland, Ont., will provide 27,000 tons of 30 and 42 in. pipe.

  • Camrose Pipe, Camrose, Alta., will provide 45,000 tons of 30 and 42 in. pipe.

Pipe production will begin in June.

In addition, Nova ordered three Coberra 2448 turbocompression packages from Cooper Rolls, Mount Vernon, Ohio, to be installed in the company's rapidly expanding northern Alberta pipeline system.
