Pipelay began on Dec. 1, 1993, on the subsea 707 km (440 mile) ARCO China Hong Kong gas trunk line from Yacheng 13-1 South China Sea to Hong Kong (OGJ, Oct. 4, 1993, p. 94).
The project is being carried out by a joint venture between Saipem and Europe Marine Contractors (EMC), equally owned by Saipem and Brown & Root.
RECORD SETTING
Pipelay commenced on schedule using the Semac 1 semisubmersible pipelay barge. The vessel completed the 10,000 mile tow from the North Sea via the Suez Canal on Nov. 10, 1993, 11 days ahead of schedule.
Brown & Root says this project will be the longest offshore pipeline ever constructed within a single lay season and with one lay vessel in a continuous program. This project is second only to the Zeepipe 1 system in offshore pipeline length, also installed by EMC's semisubmersible laybarges.
Pipelay initiated offshore Hong Kong, approximately 30 km south of Macau, and will cross water depths ranging from 16 to 150 m before ending offshore Hainan Island. Pipelay is proceeding on schedule, says Brown & Root, with as many as 450 people working offshore.
