Birchcliff Energy appoints new CEO, COO

Birchcliff Energy Ltd., Calgary, has appointed Chris Carlsen to succeed Jeff Tonken as chief executive officer upon his retirement, effective Dec. 31, 2023. Tonken, a company founder, will remain as the chairman of the board of directors.

Birchcliff Energy Ltd., Calgary, has appointed Chris Carlsen to succeed Jeff Tonken as chief executive officer upon his retirement, effective Dec. 31, 2023. Tonken, a company founder, will remain as the chairman of the board of directors.

Carlsen is currently president and chief operating officer of the company. He will assume the chief executive position Jan. 1, 2024. Carlsen first joined Birchcliff in 2008. He has been a member of the company’s executive team for over 10 years.

Theo van der Werken, currently vice-president, engineering, has been appointed as chief operating officer, effective Jan. 1, 2024. He joined Birchcliff in 2011.

Myles Bosman, executive vice-president, exploration, and David Humphreys, executive vice-president, operations, have chosen to retire effective Dec. 31, 2023.

Bosman is one of the founders of Birchcliff and Humphreys joined the company in 2009.

Duane Thompson, currently the company’s production manager, has been appointed as vice-president, operations, effective Jan. 1, 2024. He has served as Birchcliff’s production manager since May 2017.

Birchcliff is an intermediate oil and natural gas company based in Calgary with operations focused on the Montney-Doig resource play in Alberta.
