The number of rigs drilling on land remained unchanged week-over-week at 957 units. The number of rigs drilling in inland waters also was unchanged with 4 units running for the week. One additional rig was drilling offshore, bringing the number to 23 units.

US oil-directed rigs increased by 3 from last week to 800 units. A year ago, 816 units were drilling for oil. Gas-directed rigs fell by 2 to 184 rigs, 13 fewer than were drilling for gas a year ago.

Among the major oil and gas-producing states, only two saw an increase in rigs. New Mexico, with 101 rigs running, was up 2 units week over week. Louisiana increased its rig count by a single unit to reach 64.

Eight states remained unchanged this week, namely North Dakota, 57; Pennsylvania, 41; Wyoming, 32; Colorado, 31; California, 18; Alaska, 7; Utah, 6; and Arkansas, 0.
