HOUSTON, Sept. 16 -- Samuel W. Miller has been named executive vice-president and chief operating officer of Nisource Inc., Merrillville, Ind. effective Sept. 1. Miller, formerly a partner with Chicago-based Accenture, has 20 years of experience as a consultant—mainly for energy and utility companies—on the redesign, implementation, and management of business operations.

At Nisource, Miller will supervise the integration of the natural gas and power holding company's core operating businesses. He has worked with Nisource for the last 2 years as a consultant to assist in the merger integration of Nisource and Herndon, Va.-based Columbia Energy Group, which Nisource acquired in early 2000 in an $8.5 billion cash, stock, and debt deal (OGJ Online, Mar. 6, 2000).

Miller worked with Accenture since 1993, serving as managing partner of operational reengineering and mergers and acquisitions for the worldwide resources practice.
