BSEE: 91.55% of current Gulf of Mexico oil production shut-in as Hurricane Delta nears Louisiana

Offshore oil and gas operators in the US Gulf of Mexico evacuated platforms and rigs ahead of Hurricane Delta, a Category 3 storm expected to make landfall on the Louisiana coast the evening of Oct. 9.

Based on data from offshore operator reports submitted to the US Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement as of 11:30 CDT on Oct. 9, personnel have been evacuated from 274 production platforms, 42.6% of the 643 manned platforms in the US gulf.

BSEE estimates that 91.55% of current gulf crude oil production, or 1,693,607 b/d, and 62.17% of natural gas production, or 1,684.9 MMcfd, have been shut in.

Personnel have been evacuated from seven of the 10 nondynamically positioned rigs working in the gulf. Fourteen of the 17 dynamically positioned rigs, by BSEE’s count, have moved off location out of the path of the storm.

This survey is reflective of 44 companies’ reports as of 11:30 CDT Oct. 9.
