HOUSTON, July 30
-- Petrolia, Rimouski, Que., has taken over as operator of the Haldimand project and plans to drill a second well by Dec. 31.

Junex Inc. has resigned as operator and will not participate in drilling the new well, Petrolia noted. Petrolia characterizes Haldimand as the first potentially profitable oil discovery in Quebec. The province covers twice the land area of Texas.

Haldimand-1, 2 km west of Gaspe harbor, averaged 34 b/d of 50° gravity oil on a 12-day test of perforations at 950-1,090 m in Devonian sandstones in 2006, but the well was not placed on permanent production. Later studies revealed the possibility that the well has “unevaluated oil-producing intervals.”

Petrolia plans to drill Haldimand-2 at a cost of $3.1 million about 1 km northwest of the discovery well and expects to top the reservoir 125 m higher on the structure.
