Amerada discovers gas, oil off Malaysia

Amerada Hess Corp. discovered oil and natural gas with the Belud South exploration well drilled on Block SB302 off Sabah, Malaysia, 12.5 miles northwest of the Tembungo oil field.

HOUSTON, Jan. 3 -- Amerada Hess Corp. discovered oil and natural gas with the Belud South exploration well drilled on Block SB302 off Sabah, Malaysia, 12.5 miles northwest of the Tembungo oil field.

Belud South-1, drilled to 8,773 ft TD in 508 ft of water, encountered 352 ft of net gas pay. Oil was confirmed in several of the sands by a sidetrack.

Further exploratory and appraisal drilling is planned on the block.

Operator Amerada Hess and partner Kuwait Foreign Petroleum Exploration Co. each hold a 40% interest in Block SB 302, and Petronas Carigali holds the remaining 20%.
