North American drilling activity posted an increase for the week ended Sept. 19, with 542 rotary rigs working in the US and another 189 in Canada, Baker Hughes officials reported Friday.
The rig count for the US is up 3 from the previous week but down 46 from a year ago. Three additional rigs were drilling on land compared with last week. Rig counts offshore and in inland waters were unchanged at 13 and 2, respectively.
In the US and its waters, 418 rigs were drilling for oil this week, 2 more than the previous week, but down 70 from this time last year. Gas-directed rigs were unchanged with 118 units working this week. One additional unclassified rig was working in the US this week, bringing the total to 6.
Wyoming and Colorado saw rig increases this week. Both states added 2 rigs to their counts, ending the week with 15 and 14 rigs working, respectively.
Texas dropped 2 rigs this week, leaving 242 rigs working. Louisiana’s rig count is down a single unit to 36.
Canada's rig count increased by 3 this week. The count is down 22 from the same period in 2024. Two additional rigs were drilling for oil this week in Canada for a total of 128 rigs working, 16 fewer than this time last year. Gas-directed rigs were up a single unit to 60, and down 6 from this time last year.
