US rig count continues decline

US drilling activity continued to decline for the fifth consecutive week, with the number of active rotary rigs down by 5 to 1,755, compared with 1,724 drilling a year ago, Baker Hughes said.

HOUSTON, Oct. 5 -- US drilling activity continued to decline for the fifth consecutive week, with the number of active rotary rigs down by 5 to 1,755, compared with 1,724 drilling a year ago, Baker Hughes Inc. reported Oct. 5.

US land drilling registered the biggest loss of 6 rigs to 1,678 units still turning to the right. Offshore drilling lost 2 rigs to 47 in the Gulf of Mexico and 48 in federal waters as a whole. Inland water activity increased by 3 rigs to 29.

Among the major producing states, Colorado and Wyoming suffered the largest loss, down by 10 each to 109 and 68 units, respectively. New Mexico dropped 3 rigs to 66 still working. Alaska's weekly rig count declined by 1 to 4, and Louisiana was unchanged at 154. In Texas, however, the weekly rig count escalated by 13 to 843. Oklahoma and California gained 4 rotary rigs each, to 198 and 38, respectively.

Canada's rig count dropped by 15 to 332 rotary rigs still working down, from 449 at the same period last year.
