US rig count slips from 21-year high

US drilling activity dipped this week from a 21-year high, down 15 units with 1,814 rotary rigs still working, said Baker Hughes Inc.

HOUSTON, Sept. 7 -- US drilling activity dipped this week from a 21-year high, down 15 units with 1,814 rotary rigs still working, said Baker Hughes Inc.

That compared with 1,728 rotary rigs drilling during the same period in 2006.

Land operations absorbed most of this week's loss, down 13 rigs to 1,717 drilling. Inland waters operations lost 1 rig to 23. Offshore operations also were down 1 rig to 72 in the Gulf of Mexico and 74 total in federal waters.

Texas' weekly rig count increased by 2 to 855 rigs drilling. Alaska was up by 2 to 6 active rigs, and California was unchanged with 36 rigs making hole. Colorado had the biggest loss among the major producing states, down 7 to 110 rigs working. Oklahoma dropped 5 to 193. New Mexico was down 3 with 79 active rigs. Louisiana and Wyoming dropped 1 rig each, to 178 and 78, respectively.

Canada's rig count jumped by 30 to 335, still down from 491 in the same period a year ago.
