The US drilling rig count was up 1 unit to 625 rigs working for the week ended Oct. 27, according to Baker Hughes data. The count is down 143 units from the 768 rigs working this time a year ago.

The US drilling rig count was up 1 unit to 625 rigs working for the week ended Oct. 27, according to Baker Hughes data. The count is down 143 units from the 768 rigs working this time a year ago.

Land-based rigs rose 1 unit to 600 for the week. Offshore units and those drilling in inland waters were both unchanged, ending the week at respective counts of 24 and 1.

Oil-directed rigs were up 2 units from last week to 504 units working, but down 106 units from the 610 rigs drilling for oil this week a year ago. Gas-directed rigs were down 1 unit to 117, and down 39 units from the 156 rigs drilling for gas a year ago.

Among the major oil and gas-producing states, Texas was the biggest gainer this week, up 3 rigs to 311 rigs working. Pennsylvania gained a single unit to reach 22 rigs working for the week.

New Mexico, Louisiana, and West Virginia each dropped a single unit this week to reach rig counts of 100, 42, and 7, respectively.

Canada’s rig count fell by 2 units for the week. With 196 rigs running, the count is 16 fewer than the 212 rigs working this time last year. Canada gained 1 oil-directed rig to reach 122 units for the week. Its gas-directed rig count was down 3 units to 74 rigs working.
