Canada's drilling activity increased as 193 rotary rigs were working this week, 13 more than last week but down 23 from the count for this period a year ago, according to Baker Hughes.
Of those, 8 more were drilling for oil this week than last for a total of 116 and an additional 4 were drilling for gas to reach a total of 76. One unclassified rig was also added.
US drilling activity increased slightly with 622 rotary rigs working this week, up 3 from the previous week but down 147 from a year ago.
Land operations in the US are up by 2 rigs with a total of 598 rigs working. Offshore operations were up by 2 rigs to 22. Twenty rigs were drilling in the Gulf of Mexico, 2 rigs more than last week. Drilling activity in inland waters decreased by 1 rig to 2.
Of the largest oil and gas producing states, Texas saw the largest increase with a 4-rig gain to reach 301 units working.
Pennsylvania and Wyoming each added 1 rig to reach counts of 21 and 20, respectively.
New Mexico dropped 2 rigs to hit 104 for the week. Louisiana dropped a single unit to reach 42 rigs working for the week.
