Offshore this week dropped 1 unit to 20 rigs working, all in the Gulf of Mexico. Rigs drilling on land were down 8 units this week to reach 689. Rigs drilling in inland waters were unchanged at 2.
Rigs targeting oil fell 5 units to reach 570. A year ago this week, 574 rigs were drilling for oil. There were 137 units targeting gas this week, down 4 from last week. This time a year ago, 151 rigs were drilling for gas.
Among the major oil and gas-producing states, Oklahoma saw the largest drop in rigs, down 5 units from last week to reach 46. Louisiana and Utah each dropped 2 rigs to reach respective counts of 54 and 12 rigs working. New Mexico, Colorado, and Alaska each dropped a rig to hit 108, 54, and 17 rigs working for the week.
Texas added 2 rigs to end the week with 359 rigs working, while Wyoming added a single unit to hit 16 for the week.
Canada gained 2 units to 87 rigs from a week ago. There are 16 fewer rigs running than a year ago this week. Oil-directed rigs rose 3 units this week to 42, while those targeting gas decreased by a single unit to 45.
