The US rig count during the week ended Feb. 24 declined 7 units to 753, according to Baker Hughes data. The count is up 103 units from this time a year ago.

The US oil-directed rig count fell by 7 units to reach 600 rigs working for the week. Gas-directed rigs were unchanged from last week at 151. Two units were unclassified, unchanged from last week.

Land-based rigs were down 7 from a week ago, reaching 734. Unchanged from a week ago, there were 2 rigs drilling in inland waters and 17 units drilling offshore in the Gulf of Mexico.

West Virginia led the major oil- and gas-producing states with the largest number of dropped rigs for the week. A 3-unit decline left the state with 12 rigs working. New Mexico, Oklahoma, and California were down 2 units to respective counts of 106, 62, and 2. Colorado dropped a single rig to reach 17 rigs running for the week.

The rig count in Pennsylvania increased by 3 rigs to 25.

There were eight states unchanged this week, namely Texas, 370; Louisiana, 64; North Dakota, 41; Wyoming, 18; Ohio, 14; Utah, 11; and Alaska, 7; and Kansas, 0.

The rig count in Canada fell by 4 units, leaving 244 rigs working for the week. There were 224 rigs working in Canada this time a year ago. This week, there were 5 fewer rigs drilling for oil in Canada, with 158 remaining. A total of 86 rigs were drilling for gas, an increase of a single rig.
