Canadian rotary rig activity increased by 9 rigs the week ended July 8, pushing the number of rigs working to 166, up 38 from the 137 working in Canada this time a year ago, according to Baker Hughes data.
There were 7 additional rigs drilling for oil in Canada for a total of 597. Gas-directed rigs increased by 2 to 59.
US projects required 2 additional rigs drilling this week, raising the states' total to 752 rigs active—up 273 from the same time a year ago.
Rigs running in the Gulf of Mexico were unchanged at 16, while the total offshore count was 17 for the week. On land, 731 rigs were working, up 1 from last week, and up 270 from the year-ago period. Rigs drilling in inland waters increased by a single rig to 4 working for the week.
US oil-directed rigs increased by 2 this week to hit 597, up 219 from the year-ago period. Gas-directed rigs remained unchanged at 153, but still up 52 from a year ago.
Texas and Louisiana were the only onshore gainers. With an additional rig each, the states ended the week with 361 and 65 rigs working, respectively. Rig counts in the remainder of the major oil and gas producing states were unchanged.
