US drilling activity increased again this week with the addition of 13 rotary rigs, bringing the total working units to 753, well above the 470 that were drilling in the same period a year ago, according to the latest count by Baker Hughes.
The change was among land operations, up 13 units to 734 working. Offshore, the number of rigs was unchanged at 16. Inland waters activity was also unchanged at 3 rigs running.
The number of rigs drilling for natural gas for the week ended June 24 increased by 3 to 157. Those drilling for oil gained 10 to 594. There were 2 rigs unclassified. Horizontal drilling increased by 11 rigs to 685. Directional drilling was up 2 to 41.
Among the major producing states, Texas and Colorado had the largest increases. Texas gained 6 rigs this week to land at 362 rigs working. Colorado is up 3 to 19. Picking up a single rig each were New Mexico, 111; Louisiana, 63; Oklahoma, 60; and Wyoming, 19.
There were no rig losses in the major producing states this week.
Canada’s rig count decreased by 2 to 154 rotary rigs working. That’s up from 126 units a year ago. In Canada, 104 rigs were drilling for oil, unchanged from last week. Rigs drilling for gas decreased by 2 to hit 50 for the week.
