The US drilling rig count increased by 4 units to reach 479 rigs working for the week ended July 9, according to Baker Hughes data. The count is up 221 units from the 258 rigs working this time a year ago.
The number of rigs drilling on land was up 2 units week-over-week with a total of 461. The number of rigs drilling offshore was up 3 to 17.
US oil-directed rigs were up 2 rigs from last week at 378 units. This time a year ago, 181 units were drilling for oil. Rigs targeting gas increased 2 units to 101, 26 more than were drilling for gas at this time a year ago.
Of the major oil and gas-producing states, Texas saw the largest increase. A 2-rig increase brought the rig count to 224 for the week.
Four states added one rig each, namely Louisiana, 53; Ohio 10; West Virginia, 10; and Wyoming, 10.
Pennsylvania and Colorado dropped a single rig each to end the week with 18 and 12 rigs running, respectively.
Six states remained unchanged this week, namely New Mexico, 75; Oklahoma, 27; North Dakota, 18; Utah, 10; California, 6; and Alaska, 4.
Canada’s rig count increased by a single unit to 137 rigs drilling for the week. The count is 111 more than the 26 units drilling this week a year ago. At 88 units, Canada’s oil-directed rig count is one more than last week. The gas-directed rig count in Canada is up a single unit to 48.
