Baker Hughes: US rig count down 57 units to 408

The US drilling rig count fell 57 units, reaching 408 rigs working for the week ended May 1, according to Baker Hughes data. The count is down 582 units from the 990 rigs working this time a year ago.

The US drilling rig count fell 57 units, reaching 408 rigs working for the week ended May 1, according to Baker Hughes data. The count is down 582 units from the 990 rigs working this time a year ago.

The number of rigs drilling on land dropped 56 units week-over-week to a total of 392 units. The number of rigs drilling in inland waters was unchanged at 0 units for the week. The number of rigs drilling offshore dropped by one to 16.

US oil-directed rigs decreased by 53 from last week to reach 325 units. This time a year ago, 807 units were drilling for oil. Rigs targeting gas decreased by 4 units to reach 81 rigs, 102 fewer than were drilling for gas at this time a year ago.

Among the major oil and gas-producing states, Texas once again dropped the largest number of rigs. At 201 rigs running, the count is 30 fewer than the previous week. Colorado’s rig count fell by 7 to reach 8 rigs running, while Utah’s count is 5 fewer, leaving no rigs working for the week. Oklahoma dropped 5 rigs for the week, leaving 15 running.

New Mexico dropped 4 rigs to reach 66, while Pennsylvania and Wyoming each dropped 2 rigs to reach 23 and 4 rigs running, respectively.

Down a single rig this week, Louisiana is left with 39 rigs running, while North Dakota’s single unit drop leaves the state with 26 rigs working.

Four states remained unchanged this week, namely Ohio, 9; West Virginia, 7; California, 5; and Alaska, 3.

Canada’s rig count increased by a single unit for the week. At 27 rigs, the count is 34 fewer than the 61 units drilling this week a year ago. With 7 rigs drilling, Canada’s oil-directed rigs decreased by 1 unit this week. Gas-directed rigs in Canada increased by 2 units to reach 20.
