The US drilling rig count dropped 3 units to reach 1,022 rigs working for the week ended Apr. 12, according to Baker Hughes data. The count is up 14 units from the 1,008 rigs working this time a year ago.
The number of rigs drilling on land fell 4 units week-over-week to a total of 996 rigs running. The number of rigs drilling in inland waters remained unchanged at 3 units. One fewer rig was drilling offshore, bringing the number to 22 units.
US oil-directed rigs increased by 2 from last week to 833 units. A year ago, 815 units were drilling for oil. Gas-directed rigs fell by 5 to 189 rigs, 3 fewer than were drilling for gas a year ago.
Among the major oil and gas-producing states, Texas saw the largest increase in rigs week-over-week. With an increase of 3 units, the number of rigs working in Texas reached 502. With a single-unit increase each, Ohio, 15, and Kansas, 1, were the only other states showing an increase in counts.
Eight states remained unchanged this week, namely Louisiana, 65; North Dakota, 61; Wyoming, 36; Colorado, 32; California, 13; Alaska, 8; Utah, 7; and Arkansas, 0.
Oklahoma, 104, and Pennsylvania, 44, were both down 3 units each. New Mexico dropped 2 units to reach 105. West Virginia saw one fewer rig drilling for the week at 21.
Canada’s rig count is down 2 units for the week. At 66 rigs, the count is 36 fewer than the 102 units drilling this week a year ago. A 4-rig drop brought the oil-directed rig count to 18 for the week. Gas-directed rigs in Canada increased by 2 units to reach 48.
