Baker Hughes: US rig count edges down single unit to 1,026

The US drilling rig count is down 1 unit to 1,026 rigs working for the week ended Mar. 15, according to Baker Hughes data. The count is up 36 units from the 990 rigs working this time a year ago. With a 3-unit loss over last week, there are 1,001 rigs drilling on land. The number of rigs drilling offshore remains unchanged at 22 units. Those rigs drilling in inland waters added 2 units to reach 3.

The US drilling rig count is down 1 unit to 1,026 rigs working for the week ended Mar. 15, according to Baker Hughes data. The count is up 36 units from the 990 rigs working this time a year ago.

With a 3-unit loss over last week, there are 1,001 rigs drilling on land. The number of rigs drilling offshore remains unchanged at 22 units. Those rigs drilling in inland waters added 2 units to reach 3.

US oil-directed rigs fell 1 unit from last week to 833 rigs working. This number was up 33 units from the 800 rigs drilling for oil this week a year ago. Rigs targeting gas in the US are unchanged this week at 193 units, but up 4 from the 189 units drilling for gas a year ago.

Among the major oil and gas-producing states, Oklahoma lost 5 units to reach 111 rigs working. Texas, at 501 this week, and Louisiana with 65 rigs both fell 1 unit from a week ago.

Eight states stood unchanged this week, namely Pennsylvania, 47; Wyoming, 36; Colorado, 34; West Virginia, 19; California, 15; Ohio, 13; Utah, 8; and Arkansas, 0.

New Mexico, up 1 unit this week, reached 106 rigs working. Up 3 rigs each, North Dakota and Alaska reached respective counts of 56 and 10.

Canada’s rig count is down 28 units for the week. At 161 rigs, the count is 58 fewer than the 219 units drilling this week a year ago. Twenty of the lost rigs are oil-directed, bringing the count this week to 98. Rigs targeting gas in Canada lost 8 units to reach 63 rigs working.
