Baker Hughes: Canada gains 108 rigs for the week

Canada has added 108 rigs for the week ended Jan. 11, according to Baker Hughes data. While the large jump puts the total number of rigs running at 184, the count is less than the 276 units drilling this week a year ago.

The number of oil-directed rigs in Canada increased by 83, bringing the count to 103 rigs for the week. Gas-directed rigs were up 25 to 81 units.

The US drilling rig count, meanwhile, remained unchanged at 1,075 rigs working for the week. The count is up 136 units from the 939 rigs working this time a year ago.

Two additional rigs were drilling on land week-over-week, bringing the number to 1,052. One less rig was counted offshore, bringing the total number of units drilling to 21. Inland waters also dropped a single unit to reach 2 rigs working for the week.

US oil-directed rigs dropped 4 units from last week to 873 units working but remained up from the 752 rigs drilling for oil this week a year ago. Gas-directed rigs were up 4 units at 202, and up from the 187 units drilling for gas a year ago.

Among the major oil and gas-producing states, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia gained 2 units each to reach 107, 49, and 14, respectively. Two states, Ohio and Kansas, saw a single-unit gain, marking a respective 16 and 3 rigs running for the week.

Six states were unchanged this week: Utah, 6; Alaska, 9; California, 10; Wyoming, 33; Colorado, 35; and North Dakota, 53.

Texas, at 532 this week, fell 2 units from last week, as did Louisiana, which reached 63. Oklahoma saw the largest drop with a 4-unit decrease from last week to reach 136 rigs running.
