Oxy signs MOU for Mukhaizna solar steam

Occidental of Oman has signed a memorandum of understanding with GlassPoint Solar, Fremont, Calif., for the possible use of steam raised with solar energy for injection at Mukhaizna heavy oil field in south-central Oman. Under discussion is a 2-Gw plant able to produce 100,000 b/d of steam for purchase by Oxy, which operates one of the world’s largest steamfloods at Mukhaizna.

Occidental of Oman has signed a memorandum of understanding with GlassPoint Solar, Fremont, Calif., for the possible use of steam raised with solar energy for injection at Mukhaizna heavy oil field in south-central Oman (OGJ Online, May 6, 2005).

Under discussion is a 2-Gw plant able to produce 100,000 b/d of steam for purchase by Oxy, which operates one of the world’s largest steamfloods at Mukhaizna.

GlassPoint said engineering has begun to define the project scope and field-integration plans.

Separately, it is building the 1-Gw Miraah solar plant at Amal in partnership with Petroleum Development Oman to raise steam for heavy-oil recovery (OGJ Online, Oct. 30, 2018).
