Baker Hughes: US rig count unchanged at 1,048

The US drilling rig count remained unchanged at 1,048 units working for the week ended Sept. 7, according to Baker Hughes data. The count is up 104 units from this time a year ago when it stood at 944.

The US drilling rig count remained unchanged at 1,048 units working for the week ended Sept. 7, according to Baker Hughes data. The count is up 104 units from this time a year ago when it stood at 944.

Offshore units increased by a single rig with 19 units working. A total of 1,026 rigs were drilling on land, down 2 from a week ago. The number of rigs drilling in inland waters was up 1 to 3 units working.

US oil-directed rigs were down 2 from last week at 860 units working, and up from the 756 rigs drilling for oil this week a year ago. Gas-directed rigs are up 2 at 186. This time a year ago, 187 units were drilling for gas.

Among the major oil and gas-producing states, Louisiana saw the largest gain with an increase of 3 units to a total of 58 rigs working. Wyoming’s rig count increased by 2 to hit 31 rigs working. Two states—North Dakota, 53, and Alaska, 6—saw single-unit gains.

Six states were unchanged this week, namely Texas, 528; Pennsylvania, 41; Colorado, 30; Ohio, 21; California, 15; and West Virginia, 13.

Down 1 rig, Utah has 5 rigs running. Kansas lost its only running rig with its loss.

Oklahoma and New Mexico both dropped 2 units to reach 137 and 100 rigs working, respectively.

Canada’s rig count, meanwhile, dropped for the second straight week with a 24-unit loss. With 204 rigs running, the count remains slightly above the 202 units drilling this week a year ago. Canada dropped 18 oil-directed rigs to reach 133 units for the week and dropped 6 gas-directed rigs to reach 71 units.
