The US drilling rig count reached 1,052 units working for the week ended July 6, up 5 rigs from a week ago, according to Baker Hughes data. The count is up 100 units from this time a year ago when the count stood at 952.

Offshore units remained unchanged from last week with 19 rigs working. A total of 1,029 rigs were drilling on land, up 5 units from last week. The number of rigs drilling in inland waters was unchanged at 4 units working.

US oil-directed rigs were up 5 units this week to 863 and up from the 763 rigs drilling for oil this week a year ago. Gas-directed rigs were unchanged at 187. This time a year ago, 189 units were drilling for gas.

Among the major oil and gas-producing states, New Mexico saw the largest gain with an increase of 4 units to a total of 99 rigs working. North Dakota gained 3 units to reach 57. Louisiana is up 2 units from last week for a total of 57 rigs running. Oklahoma and Wyoming each gained 1 rig from last week to reach 141 and 27 rigs running, respectively.

Five states were unchanged this week, namely Pennsylvania, 37; Ohio, 22; West Virginia, 17; California, 16; and Arkansas, 1.

Texas saw the largest drop in rigs again this week, down 4 units to 526. Rig counts in Alaska and Utah dropped 2 units each for totals of 7 and 6 rigs working, respectively. Colorado dropped 1 unit to 31. Canada continues to increase its rig count, gaining 10 rigs to 182 working from a week ago. This week a year ago, 175 rigs were drilling. Oil-directed rigs increased 9 units this week to 126, while those targeting gas gained 1 unit to 56.
