Baker Hughes: US rig count gains 1 unit to 1,046

The overall US rig count continues its climb with a slight gain this week. Baker Hughes’ calculation of active US rigs increased by 1 unit during the week ended May 18 to 1,046. Rigs drilling for oil were unchanged at 844 rigs compared with last week, while those rigs targeting natural gas gained 1 unit to 200 rigs.

Rigs drilling for oil were unchanged at 844 rigs compared with last week, while those rigs targeting natural gas gained 1 unit to 200 rigs.

The US rig count is up 145 rigs from last year’s count of 901, with oil rigs up 124 and gas rigs up 20.

The US offshore rig count decreased 2 rigs from last week to 19. This count is down 4 units year-over-year. On land, meanwhile, the count increased 2 units to 1023 units this week.

Among the major oil and gas-producing states, New Mexico gained 3 rigs this week to 92. Texas gained 2 units to 525 rigs drilling. Kansas gained 1 rig—its only rig running.

Seven states were unchanged this week: Oklahoma, 138; Pennsylvania, 39; Wyoming, 26; West Virginia, 17; California, 15; Utah, 8; and Arkansas 1.

Five states were down 1 rig each this week: Louisiana 61; North Dakota, 55; Colorado, 29; Ohio, 23; and Alaska, 7.

In Canada, the overall rig count increased 4 units this week to reach 83. Rigs drilling for oil jumped 6 units to 38 and those targeting gas fell 2 units to 45. The total count is down 2 units from this time a year ago when 85 rigs were working.
