Canada’s National Energy Board and the Canadian Energy Pipeline Association have formed a pipeline safety committee.

Canada’s National Energy Board and the Canadian Energy Pipeline Association have formed a pipeline safety committee.

Its three-part mandate includes collaborative work on operational matters, regulatory processes, and lifecycle issues. Senior leadership from NEB and CEPA will co-chair and participate in meetings of the joint committee.

NEB said it will maintain its regulatory independence during committee meetings and that the “committee will in no way limit or infringe upon the regulatory mandate of the NEB” nor will it “discuss individual applications or details or other matters before the board.”

The committee will focus on the advancement of safety culture across the pipeline industry, common approaches to align pipeline safety indicators, and simplification of management audits.

“Through the joint committee, we expect enhanced safety and environmental outcomes for all Canadians,” said Peter Watson, NEB chair and chief executive officer.
