The second phase of development of giant Halfaya oil field in Iraq has started crude oil production, reported China National Petroleum Corp.
The second phase of the project, which kicked off in April 2013, included the laying of a 272-km trunk pipeline, construction of a 5 million tonne/year crude processing center, and the drilling and completion of 43 wells (OGJ Online, Apr. 17, 2013). Currently, Halfaya field is producing at an average rate of more than 200,000 b/d, CNPC said.
The field’s first phase of development, which started in June 2012, reached production of 100,000 b/d of crude oil and 2.6 million cu m/day of natural gas (OGJ Online, June 27, 2012).
Preliminary work of the third phase project is being conducted as planned, CNPC said. Crude output of the whole project is expected to reach 400,000 b/d by yearend 2016, CNPC said.
PetroChina’s partners include Total E&P Iraq and Petronas Carigali.
