HOUSTON, Sept. 25 -- Using innovative subsea technology, Total E&P Nederland BV began natural gas production earlier this month from K5F field on the Dutch continental shelf. The field, on the K5a Block, lies about 115 km northwest of Den Helder.

Total expects to double its initial 45 MMscfd of production to 90 MMscfd this fall.

Development included completion of two wells that use electrically activated subsea Christmas trees rather than conventional hydraulically operated technology, Total said, and installation of 10 km of 20 cm subsea pipeline. The line connects to the existing K6N satellite platform, where it is treated and transported via the NoordGasTransport pipeline to Uithuizen (Groningen) onshore.

Total's K5a Block partners are EBN, Dyas BV, Goal Petroleum (Netherlands) BV, and Lundin Netherlands BV.
