The rig count in Canada ended the week with 14 fewer rigs running. For the week ended Apr. 19, the rig count in Canada stood at 127, according to Baker Hughes data. There were 4 fewer gas-directed rigs in Canada this week and 10 fewer oil-directed rigs, bringing the week’s totals to 67 and 60, respectively.

The total rig count in Canada is up 22 rigs from the 105 rigs working this time a year ago.

In the US, 2 additional rigs were running for a total of 619. The count is down 134 from the 753 rigs running in the US this time last year.

US oil-directed rigs increased by 5 units to 511, down 80 from this time in 2023. Gas-directed rigs decreased by 3 to 106. A year ago, 159 units were drilling for gas.

The number of rigs drilling on land increased by 1 rig from last week to 599. Drilling rigs in inland waters were unchanged at 0 while offshore activity increased with a 1-unit gain to reach 20 rigs working for the week.

There was little movement among the major and gas producing states. Texas added 2 rigs to reach 296 units working for the week. Oklahoma and Louisiana each added 1 rig to reach respective counts of 45 and 40 rigs running. New Mexico and Ohio each dropped a unit to end the week with 108 and 11 rigs remaining, respectively.
