LONDON, Jan. 15 -- Shell UK Ltd. and BP PLC let separate contracts to Reservoir Imaging Ltd. (RIL), a 4D seismic software services consultancy in Edinburgh, to design and plan 4D seismic surveys for their North Sea operations.

The value of the contracts was not disclosed. RIL will work for Shell over 2-3 months on two producing Central North Sea fields as part of the company's reservoir management strategy. RIL will help with quality control issues and implement its proprietary field-based Graphical Information Systems, which will make it easier for Shell to repeat the survey.

"Only if all the survey parameters are observed can companies track the performance of oil and gas reservoirs by comparing images of the subsurface recorded over time during production," RIL said.

A company spokesman told OGJ that it would design and plan a 4D seismic survey for one of BP's large fields in the North Sea, and the work would take 2-3 months to complete.
