HOUSTON, June 8 -- Petróleo Brasileiro SA (Petrobras) started oil production from FPSO Marlim Sul, a floating production, storage, and offloading vessel moored in Marlim Sul field in the Campos basin off Brazil (OGJ, Feb. 9, 2004, p. 40).

The FPSO, which lies 110 km off Rio de Janeiro state in 1,160 m of water, has the capacity to process 100,000 b/d of oil, store 1.6 million bbl of oil, compress 2.3 million cu m/day of gas, and inject 125,000 b/d of water.

The vessel will increase the oil producing capacity of the field to about 250,000 b/d from the current 185,000 b/d. Nine of the 35 wells in Module 1, the first phase of the Marlim Sul development, will tie into this FPSO.

The FPSO was chartered by Petrobras from Single Buoy Moorings Inc. of Marly, Switzerland, in January 2003 through a contract with an initial term of 7 years and 10 months.

Marlim Sul field comprises 5 oil wells, 4 water injection wells, and underwater pipelines that collect production and transport gas, besides the platform itself. The system is expected to reach peak production by the end of second half.
